History
Originally called The Gamekeeper, the pub was first opened on August 31st 1956,I've been told it was a Friday night and the late Mr. Jack Richards was the resident Licensee. Then owned by the Ben Trueman Brewery. To see a list of previous Publicans of The Poacher, click here.

Here is one of the original photos (Fig. 1.1) taken outside the Gamekeeper in 1957 on a days outing to Southend. Jack is seated in the front row with the straw hat.

The Gamekeeper was then made up of three partitions, a lounge, public bar and an Off-licence and held regular entertainment on most evenings with the piano situated in the lounge area where anyone could take their talent and play to their hearts content.

Fig. 1.2 shows a typical evening at The Gamekeeper in 1962.   Pictured here playing is Mr. Christopher Skillern banging out an old tune, he now resides in Cornwall I'm told, his granddaughter Kerri is presently an employee here.             More.....
